22 Jun Tanzania Grandmothers Gathering
Between Feb. 26 and March 1, 2018, Thelma Hanson along with other grandmothers groups across Canada, took a trip to Uganda and Tanzania to participate in the Grandmothers Gathering in Arusha. They were joined by 200 Tanzanian grandmothers who built solidarity and shared their stories, strategies, expertise, and vision for a future for themselves and for the children in their care. In 20 workshops and plenaries, they discussed the challenges and successes they have had in dealing with the impact of the AIDS pandemic on their families and communities: dealing with stigma, parenting orphaned children, raising HIV positive grandchildren, ensuring food security, developing income-generating activities, advocating for inheritance rights, and demanding access to health care.
