29 May Grandmothers – “The Unsung Heroes of Africa”
Millions of African children have been orphaned because of AIDS and are being raised by their grandmothers. Grands ‘n’ More Winnipeg is a group of grandmothers and others who are part of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Our goal is to support the work of community-based organizations in sub-Saharan Africa who improve the lives of grandmothers raising their own and other orphaned grandchildren.
African grandmothers have said “We have lived through the enormity of AIDS in our communities, and have played our part in helping our nations survive the devastation. … We are the leaders in our communities and countries. …We will continue to stand in solidarity with one another throughout Africa and with our Canadian sisters. We are strong, we are visionary, we have faith and we are not alone.” (Manzini Statement, May 8, 2010)
