02 Jan December 2019 Member Meeting
Grands ‘n’ More Winnipeg wrapped up 2019 with the distribution of shortbread, an Origami Owl Fundraising Sale, and a presentation from a representative of Nine Circles Community Health Centre.
Angela, an Origami Owl distributer and passionate about giving back to community, met long time Grands ‘n’ More member Laurel Garvie while Laurel was in palliative care. The December Members meeting was one of the sales where Angela committed to donate 100% of her Origami Owl commission to thE SLF in remembrance of Laurel.
At the break members picked up their shortbread orders baked by Vera Rosolowich and her husband. This year they baked over 50 dozen shortbread cookies (!) and donated 100% of the sales to the SLF.
To mark World AIDS week, Shauna Fay of Nine Circles Community Resource Centre, spoke to us about HIV and BBSTDs (blood borne sexually transmitted diseases) and the work her organization does at the local level to test, treat, communicate and prevent these diseases. Her take home message was that greatest risk is with the percentage of people who do not know they have one of these diseases, and yet how easy it was to get tested. She encouraged everyone (no matter what age) to ask their physicians to include this check when they are sending patients for regular blood work.
