What We Do

Grands ‘n’ More Winnipeg was established in October 2007 as part of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The goal of our group is to improve the lives of the grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa who are raising their orphaned grandchildren owing to AIDS. The organization is open to adults of all ages, including but not limited to grandparents.

There are three major areas in which we focus our efforts – Awareness, Fundraising and Global Issues.

Awareness

We aim to raise awareness within the membership of GnM and within the broader community about the desperate plight of the African grandmothers and their orphaned grandchildren. To do so, we maintain a Speaker’s Bureau, the members of which address a wide variety of community groups, service clubs, churches and workplaces. Talks may include the use of DVDs, Power Point presentations, handouts and/or displays and are tailored to the needs of specific groups. Topics may include learning about the life of the grandmothers including the challenges they face and how they are meeting those challenges and creating better lives for themselves and their families. As well, we offer presentations on the Stephen Lewis Foundation and how, through the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, it is supporting more than 300 grassroots organizations engaged in 1100 projects in 15 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. We believe that we can all make a difference in the lives of these grandmothers and grandchildren.

In addition to providing speakers, we organize Potluck Dinners which engage the broader community and which offer an opportunity for members and friends to meet other individuals concerned about social justice issues. At these events and many other events throughout the year, we staff display tables with information and artifacts related to Africa and the grandmothers.

If you would like to book a Speaker, or if you are interested in becoming a volunteer speaker or a member of the Awareness Committee, please contact us (link). If you would just like more information about what we do, please feel free to get in touch.

Fundraising

Grands ‘n’ More Winnipeg raises funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) which in turn supports grass-roots projects in 15 sub-Saharan countries. Fundraising is a central focus for Grands ‘n’ More Winnipeg because it is the quickest and most concrete way we can work together to improve the lives of the grandmothers of sub-Saharan Africa and the children orphaned by AIDS in their care.

Our most successful and enduring fundraiser is the sale of our bags and other crafts which are all made by volunteers in Manitoba. After modest costs are covered, 100% of the remainder goes to the SLF and on to Africa. We ensure this is the case by collecting annual fees from our members to cover local administration costs. In September 2015, we held our first Art From the Attic sale to great success. More than $31,000 was raised through the sale of approximately 1500 pieces of art. Donations exceeded our expectations, we had excellent support from the media in promoting the sale and customers were thrilled with the wonderful bargains. We heard from many people how excited they were to come to the sale and that they planned to donate art next year and to return, bringing their friends.

Another successful event that we host each Spring is our Scrabble tournament. This is definitely a fun event for all ages and nothing like the usual serious Scrabble game. You can play for as little as $20 but we encourage you to have your friends and family sponsor you to raise as much as possible. Honorary “grandmothers” are on hand to assist you in “cheating” your way to success through a variety of strategies – each of which only costs a toonie. All kinds of prizes are awarded throughout the afternoon and snacks are on hand to keep you going.

We are always looking for new and unique ways to fundraise on behalf of the African grandmothers. We encourage you to join us and to add your ideas and energy so that we may continue to generate those all-important funds.

Global Issues

Through our Global Issues Working Group we raise the understanding of our members by liaising  with other groups, local or national, in areas of work consistent with those of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

We also alert members  to special events sponsored by other groups in the city, such as IIWR, Grannies Gone Global, MCIC, MARL, to name a few of our connections.
